Taxpayer tried to blame accountant for late VAT appeal

A company that “had entrusted preparation of its VAT returns for the relevant periods to an agent but, for whatever reason, the agent did not submit the returns in a timely manner,” were unsuccessful in their appeal to HMRC. It was turned away in part due to a 5 month delay in submitting the appeal.


This case shows that a failure to submit your VAT obligations falls on your shoulders, even if you have given the agent this responsibility. Ultimately, the responsibility is yours to choose a credible agent and to scrutinise the work they perform on your behalf.
